The General Sir John Monash Foundation offers a minimum of eight Scholarships per year for postgraduate study at a non-Australian university. Only Australian citizens graduating from Australian universities are eligible to apply.


Applying for the 2014 John Monash Scholarships

To apply for these Scholarships, an Applicant must complete the Application Form.  Academic transcripts will also require to be scanned and emailed with the completed Application Form (see Instructions to Applicants). Two Referees must be nominated and contact details provided, but in the initial Application their reports are not required – Applicants will contact Referees upon shortlisting for interviews. Applicants must inform the Referees upon nomination, and Guidelines to Referees should be forwarded to the Referees by the Applicant. Applicants will then need to email their completed Application Form and Academic Transcripts to the email address provided in the Instructions to Applicants documentation.

The Scholarships

The John Monash Scholarships are not limited by age, gender, or academic field of study. They may be taken up at any non-Australian university, subject to that university being considered to be amongst the global leaders in the chosen field of study. While no upper age limit is stipulated, Scholarships will be made to those whose major contribution to their field and to the community lies ahead of them.


Fields of Study and Choice of University

The Scholarships support any postgraduate degree at any overseas University; however the Applicant must be able to argue the merits of the chosen course and institution. Information on courses and Universities in a chosen country can be found here.


Commencement of Studies

The Scholarships are granted for the commencement of the study programme in the calendar year following the year of application and selection.


Benefits

The Scholarships provide funding of AUD $50,000 per year for a maximum of three years. The John Monash Scholarships may be held concurrently with other scholarships or awards, at the discretion of the Foundation. The annual Award sum of $50,000 is normally paid in two equal payments.


Criteria

Applicants must be Australian citizens. In awarding John Monash Scholarships, factors considered include:

  • Outstanding intellect – demonstrated by academic excellence (having completed or are about to complete a university degree or degrees with outstanding results, such as an honours degree (with a classification of 1 or 2A) or equivalent, scholarship, language skills, musical skills and/or publications;
  • Leadership – demonstrated and potential – within or outside of an Applicant's field of study or professional field;
  • Citizenship – community service;
  • Well-defined research project or study programme to be conducted at a non-Australian University;
  • The case presented by the Applicant of the significance of the applicant's potential contribution to their field and to the community;
  • Referee reports outlining the applicant’s abilities. 

The John Monash Scholarships are available for postgraduates to attend universities that are considered to be amongst the global leaders in the field of study. Applicants should identify in their applications up to three universities to which they have sought or would seek acceptance.


Application Process

Applications for the 2014 Scholarships will close on 31 August 2013 or the next working day.

Selection procedure:

  • State and Territory based Panels will shortlist applicants and recommend nominations for consideration by the National Awards Committee.
  • The National Awards Committee, chaired by a Director of the Foundation is responsible for examining applications and making recommendations to the Board of the Foundation, who will make the final selection of winners.
  • Winners of the John Monash Scholarships are informed by the CEO of the Foundation, and publically presented by the Governor-General of Australia in March 2014.
  • The decision of the Board of the General Sir John Monash Foundation is final.
