The General Sir John Monash
Foundation
The Patron-in-Chief of the Foundation is Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia.
The Foundation is a charitable organisation formed in
Australia as a public company limited by guarantee. It
has named status in Australian income tax legislation
as a “Deductible Gift Recipient.”
Its purpose is to raise funds for, and to administer,
Australia’s most prestigious postgraduate scholarships
– the General Sir John Monash
Awards - to recognise academic excellence and leadership.

General Peter Cosgrove AC MC (Retd)
General Cosgrove is a graduate from the Royal Military
College, Duntroon.
He was the Chief of the Australian Defence Force from 3
July 2002 until his retirement in July 2005.
General
Cosgrove was appointed a Companion of the Military Division
of the Order of Australia for his role as commander of
the international forces in East Timor, ending in 2000.
He was awarded the Military Cross during his service
in Vietnam. His other awards include the Companion of
the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) and Commander of
the United States Legion of Merit.
General Cosgrove was Australian of the Year in 2001. |

Mr David Clarke
David Clarke was a 2007 Award Winner. David holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Melbourne and he used his Monash Award to gain a Masters of Public Administration at Harvard University. In the lead up to his Award, David acted as a strategic change consultant with CARE International, a leading international humanitarian NGO, and as economic development consultant with the Cape York Institute for Policy and Leadership. David is currently a project leader with the Boston Consulting Group in Melbourne. |

Mr John M. Green
John M. Green is a director, investor and writer. In addition to the General Sir John Monash Foundation, John is also a director of two other not-for-profits, Macquarie Bank Foundation and the Centre for Independent Studies. He is also a director of WorleyParsons Limited. Until August 2006, he was an investment banker at Macquarie Bank, where he was an executive director for 13 years. His professional career before investment banking was 17 years in law, including as a partner in two law firms, Freehills and Dawson Waldron. In past years, he was also a member of the ASX National Listings Committee and held a number of posts in the Securities Institute of Australia (now Finsia). |

Mrs Yolanda Klempfner AO LLB
Mrs Yolanda Klempfner is Chair of the Foundation’s
National Awards Committee. She is a lawyer in Victoria
and is currently Investment Director for Texmond Mgt. Yolanda
is a Board Member of Epworth Hospital, RMIT Foundation
and RMIT Gallery and is a Trustee of the National Council
for Jewish Women and a Member of the Anti-Discrimination
Tribunal. She was formerly Chancellor of RMIT. |

Mr Michael Robinson AO LLB
Mr Michael Robinson is a Consultant to the law firm, Allens Arthur Robinson.
He was the Senior Partner of Arthur Robinson & Hedderwicks during 1996-2001
and was its Managing Partner 1980-1988. He was Chairman of TABCORP
Holdings Limited and a Director of Clough Limited until November 2007.

Ms Jillian Segal AM
Jillian is a Director of the National Australia Bank and the Australian Securities Exchange Limited, a member of the Major Performing Arts Board of the Australia Council and President of the Administrative Review Council. She is also a member of the Council of the University of New South Wales and involved with a number of other community not-for-profit organisations.
Jillian has had a career in law, regulation, governance and policy development. Formally she was Chairman of the Banking and Financial Services Ombudsman Board and a Member of the Audit Standards Oversight Board for PricewaterhouseCoopers.
From October 1997 to June 2002, Jillian was a Commissioner of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), being Deputy Chair from November 2000 to June 2002. Prior to joining ASIC, Jillian was a corporate lawyer specialising in corporate and environmental law, having been a partner at Allen Allen & Hemsley (now Allens Arthur Robinson).
Jillian is a graduate in arts and law from UNSW and has a Masters of Law from Harvard Law School.

Dr Peter Shergold AC BA (Hons) MA PhD
Peter is the Macquarie Group Foundation Professor at the Centre for Social Impact, a cross-university partnership of the business schools at the University of New South Wales, Melbourne University and Swinburne University of Technology. Peter had been Head of the Department of Economic History at the University of NSW before joining the Australian Public Service.
In his 20 years in the Australian Public Service, Peter served as Public Service Commissioner, CEO of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission, Secretary of the Department of Workplace Relations and Small Business and Secretary of the Department of Education, Science and Training, before serving as Secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet from February 2003 for five years.
Peter is also a non-Executive Director of AMP Ltd and the Chairman of QuintessenceLabs, a venture capital start-up. In the not-for profit arena he is Chairman of the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation, a director of the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence.

Emeritus Professor Deane Terrell AO BEc
MEc(Hons) PhD
Professor Deane Terrell is an Emeritus Professor at the
National Graduate School of Management at The Australian
National University (ANU). He is currently Chair of the
AARNet Board of Management, Vice President of IDP Education
Australia, Chair and Board Member of the International
English Language Testing System (IELTS), Chair of the Board
of the Sir Roland Wilson Foundation and Chair of the Board
of Karley Technologies Pty Ltd, and Member of the Canberra
School of Music Foundation and the Advisory Board for the
Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies (CAIS). He has held
directorships on the Board of the Australian Vice-Chancellor’s
Committee, and the Australian Education Office (Washington).

Dr Peter Binks, BSc (Hons)(Tas) DPhil (Oxon)
Peter succeeded Ken Crompton as Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation on September 1, 2009. He was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, submitting a doctoral thesis in Theoretical Physics on modeling of the orbits of stars in normal galaxies. After leaving Oxford, Peter has had a corporate career with consultants McKinsey & Company, resources firm BHP, and telecommunications company Telstra. From 2003 he was Chief Executive Officer of technology firm Nanotechnology Victoria. He is also a Director of Ceramic Fuel Cells Limited.
